Dr. Magro’s talk offered a first-hand account of a young man who was bullied as he was growing up on the autism spectrum. He shared the difficulties of having autism and not being able to express and defend himself. Dr. Magro discussed the causes and effects of bullying on our community and in our schools, including a powerful story of a young woman with autism who was a victim of bullying and the struggles she faced while reconciling with her self-worth in the aftermath. He also touched on behaviors that are considered bullying, including cyberbullying, and the damaging effects it can have on our students. To conclude, Dr. Magro detailed a seven-step plan to take a stand against bullying that self-advocates, families and professionals can adopt.
