The Arc of Warren County’s Classic Gift Shop Provides a Meaningful Work Experience for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Washington, N.J., March 15, 2022 – The definition of the word Serendipity is the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. Serendipity is also the name of The Arc of Warren County’s classic gift shop located right in the heart of Washington at 40 East Washington Avenue. It is perhaps a hidden gem in the area, but the happy feelings that customers may have from shopping at Serendipity is most definitely not caused by chance.

Serendipity features products that are created by individuals with disabilities or individuals who have loved ones with disabilities.  In addition, Serendipity provides a meaningful work experience for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“Serendipity supports the individuals who work here by providing an environment that will strengthen their math, business and social skills,” says Beverly Stewart, Serendipity’s Store Manager.  “Their responsibilities range from greeting customers to working the cash register. It is one of my goals to foster a workplace that is fulfilling to our employees.”

Serendipity features vintage and consignment items that are not sold anywhere else in the area. The focus is to sell items at an affordable price point. Some of the most popular items that are sold at Serendipity include jewelry and handcrafted soaps and lotions.

“We have a loyal following at Serendipity,” says Jennifer Speth, Director of Day and Community Based Supports at The Arc of Warren County. “We have been at our current location for over eight years and want more individuals to know that we are an attractive local shopping option that is owned by The Arc of Warren County.
