March 6 Rally for 10% Solution

On March 6th, The Arc of New Jersey will be hosting a day at the State House in Trenton to draw attention to the Division of Developmental Disabilities’ community residential waiting list. 

There are nearly 8,000 individuals currently on the waiting list for a community residential placement and nearly half are on the “Priority Category” of the waiting list.  All families, or anyone else who is concerned about this issue, are encouraged to attend and show support for the “10% Solution” which we are advocating be included in the State’s FY2009 budget. 

The 10% Solution requires that the New Jersey Department of Human Services commit to a plan that will address the needs of 10% of the Priority Category community residential waiting list each year.

Families Network Action Alert: This is the critical time to get a budget message to Governor Corzine!

Attached is a flier to send to Governor Corzine asking him to fund the 10% Solution . Please print out the flier and personalize it with a hand-written message. If you are also able to include a picture of your family or your loved one with a developmental disability, that would be ideal. Your personal note could include something like:

“Amanda has been on the waiting list for 7 years. We are exhausted and simply cannot wait any longer. Please fund the 10% Solution.”

“Although Amanda is only 5 years old, we know there will come a day when she will need supported housing in our community. When that day comes, we do not want to have to wait for this essential service.”

“Amanda is now living independently in a group home and it has been a lifesaver for our family. Please give other families this same opportunity by funding the 10% Solution.”
